Recipe Rewards
A brief assigned by representatives of the City of Sydney, who found that consumers had become reliant on online experiences, making it hard for local businesses to reintegrate after COVID-19 lockdowns. Our task was to find new ways to bring people to Sydney and support businesses after pandemic restrictions had lifted.

The Recipe Rewards program encourages customers to dine in at restaurants by creating a reward system that allows them to earn a recipe and ingredient kit.

Research
City of Sydney provided us with interviews they had conducted with local business owners and workers ranging from food outlets to festivals.
How has COVID-19 impacted local businesses?
Capacity Restrictions
Businesses were enforced to reduce capacity at their venues, this had a large impact on business revenue, making it harder to for owners to stay afloat
Event Cancellations
Physical events were mostly cancelled, resulting in profit loss and forcing businesses to pivot to digital solutions.
Increased Online Traffic
Some businesses thrived in the online space, using click and collect methods and deliveries to sustain. The pandemic also opened some businesses up to a global market.
As the lockdown restrictions were easing, it led to a greater influx of physical customers than expected. People had become restless from staying indoors resulting in a post pandemic boom for outdoor activity.
Point of View Statement
COVID restrictions are starting to ease, some businesses will have to readapt due to this and the sudden shift might be difficult or overwhelming.
Using the Point of View Statement, we brainstormed four how might we questions that focused on different business areas. After deliberating as a team, we chose option three as we felt that the food industry has arguably been impacted the most by the COVID restrictions. Consumers will also be looking to visit restaurants, cafes etc the most after lockdown restrictions are lifted.
1
How might we help retail businesses thrive in a post pandemic world?
2
How might we assist retail stores with the growing demands they may face?
3
How might we reintroduce restaurants to restaurant goers?
4
How might we help artists/entertainers to get back out and showcase their work?
Concept Generation
Make it FEEL like people are experiencing a wider variety of culture and cuisines.
Make people THINK about how diverse the city of Sydney really is.
Get people to EXPERIENCE new foods and cultures that diverge from their norms.
Proposed Solution
Recipe Rewards Program
Assumption Map
To understand the risks of our proposed solution, we created an assumption map. It was important for us to look at the concept through the perspective of it being implemented, as it enables us to explore the risks involved and plan ahead.
Storyboarding
Insight Matrix
We conducted interviews to gather feedback about our solution and used an insight matrix to collate the data into categorized information.
Likes
  • Respondents found it a good concept overall
  • Thinks it would be good to invite friends over and show off recipes you’ve learned
Criticisms
  • There were doubts that it might encourage people to come back
  • People may not have access to specific ingredients e.g. secret ingredients made by restaurants
Questions
  • How do you know that the recipes being handed out are used by the customers?
  • How do I know if the recipe I choose is good?
Ideas
  • Ask Customers if they would be interested, after they have tried a recipe
  • Look for other ways to make it interesting
  • Make it easy to do, e.g. provide ingredients or a link to a shopping cart
Recipe Card
This is one iteration of the recipe card, different colors were available for restaurants who wanted variety and alignment with their brand.
Reflection
Skills
  • Learning the design thinking process and applying the principles to a real world scenario
  • Analysing data from interviews for research driven problem solving
  • Risk assessment using an assumption map
What Next
The project gave a glimpse of what it would be like working for clients with a given brief. I want to continue learning more about how professional designers approach briefs such as this. I intend to follow City of Sydney and see what they are able to come up with to help local businesses.
